Welcome to the new and improved Acorn Stash! It’s time to get this show on the creative road. (The Universe told me so…)
I’ve always said that you don’t need to hit me any more than three or four times to make sure I get the message, whatever that message may be. This weekend and this morning are a prime example of that…
I have been procrastinating big-time for the last two weeks because all that’s left to write in my first novella is the big action scene and the love scenes. Why? Because so far I think the whole book pretty much sucks, and I can’t wait to get into editing it. But first, I have to finish the draft.
On the weekend the Universe started giving me hints to get over myself and get it done already.
It all started on the weekend when I picked up the book Nine Day Authorphobia: Laugh at Your Fear of Writing: Suck Less for Author Success and found out that it’s not just me that’s afraid of sucking big time. I’m only about one-quarter of the way through it, but so far I’m liking the author’s style and am looking forward to finishing it.
The second sign came when I found out last night that one of my author friends is hosting a challenge for people who want to get started writing fiction. I love Tiffany’s challenges and have taken part in more than a few of them over the years. In fact, she’s the one who got me seriously thinking about writing fiction when she introduced me to the Kindling course a couple of years ago. (Yes, I’m a little slow on the implementation, partly because of the aforementioned fear of sucking.)
This morning I woke up at 5 a.m. all ready to dive in. I did my yoga, wrote in my journal, and then checked my phone for overnight messages. My message from the Universe this morning was…
There’s been a lot of wishing, hoping, and whinging going on around here lately.
“I wish I could get this book finished.”
“I wish I could write as fast as Tiffany.”
“Why can’t I write faster?”
“I’m hoping to get the first draft done this week.”
And my all-time favorite… “I’m stuck.”
You get the picture. All the brilliant self-sabotage tactics I can think of to avoid putting my butt in the chair and actually writing the climax scenes have come into play in the last two weeks.
So, I turn on the computer and open up my browser. I have this awesome startup screen from Momentum Dash that gives you a beautiful picture, an inspirational quote for the day, and asks you what your priority is. It’s got a bunch of other features too that I haven’t really looked at much yet. Wanna take a guess what the quote for today is?
“Create something today even if it sucks.” ~ unknown
When I went searching to see if I could find the author, I found out that Word Brand(tm) has the saying on mugs, t-shirts and other goodies at Studio6. Guess who’s shopping already this morning! (You can see the collection here.)
So the moral of the story is…
You’re gonna suck when you first start. So get over yourself, and just write already!
Have a great day!
