Tips for Finding Happiness and Joy in Your Life

smiley faceToo often we put off finding happiness and joy as something that can be done another day. It’s so easy to say I’ll worry about being happy after this is done, or that is taken care of. Even though you know you should be living each day as if it were your last it’s hard to actually do it. There’s always one more thing to take care of before we can allow ourselves to relax and just “be happy.”

Take it from me, as someone who has survived two heart attacks — it’s more important to take time each day to be happy than it is to push yourself to just get one more thing done.

And, it doesn’t have to be a big thing either. Sometimes finding happiness and joy can be as simple as stopping and taking a deep breath of fresh air.

Finding happiness and joy in life has become my number one priority. These are just a few of the ways I’ve found to go about it…

1. Spending time with family. Nothing makes me happier than spending quality time with my son. Whether it’s taking a long walk, playing a round of golf, or just sitting down to watch a hockey game it’s a great source of happiness for me that he’s still willing to spend time with Mom.

2. Doing something enjoyable. This is a biggie, especially when working from home. It’s so easy for me to keep working right up until I’m ready to fall asleep at the computer. Even though I know this is not conducive to happiness or good health, I still do it way more often than I should. I’ve found that taking the last hour before bed to do something just for me is a great way to relax and I go to sleep feeling happier and more relaxed that if I worked all night and then stumbled into bed.

3. Getting outside. I wasn’t kidding earlier when I said that happiness could be found in a deep breath of fresh air. Being able to spend a few minutes in nature each day (even if it’s only your backyard garden) is a great way to reconnect with the outside world.

4. Trying something new. Do you have a list of things you’ve always wanted to try? If you pick something on that list and just do it, you might be surprised at how happy and rejuvenated you feel when you move outside the familiar confines of your comfort zone.

5. Finally, eliminating as much stress from your life as you possibly can is a great way to instantly feel more happy. Worry and stress are two of the biggest obstacles to finding happiness and joy in life. When you find ways to reduce the stress in your life you will find yourself feeling much more happy and relaxed. If you need ideas on how to reduce stress in your life, you can grab the free booklet “50 Simple Stress Relief Strategies” from the Acorn Stash website.

I hope that these tips for finding happiness and joy in your life are helpful. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

15 Little Things You Can Do To Feel Happier Today

raindrops on roseThere are two things I’ve learned over the years when it comes to being happy.

First, happiness is in the little things. Sure, the big things like falling in love or winning the lottery will make you happy too, but those don’t happen every day.

Second, on the days when you don’t feel so happy, there are things you can do to lift yourself out of that place. When it comes right down to it, we’re all responsible for our own happiness.

So with that in mind, here are 15 little things you can do to make yourself happy today:

1. Listen to your favorite song. It’s amazing how just hearing a song you love can brighten up your day. Fire up your music player, or just turn on the radio.

2. Get outside and enjoy nature. You can sit on a bench and watch the river flow, go for a walk on a trail, watch the sun rise or just star-gaze from your porch at night. Don’t forget to smell the flowers!

3. Watch children at play. Seeing their freedom and creativity is bound to put a smile on your face and make you feel happier.

4. Splurge on a favorite treat. You wouldn’t want to do this every day, but every once in awhile, head out for a smoothie, a latte, or even ice cream.

5. Call your best friend. Hearing a friendly voice, and knowing that someone loves you is a great pick-me-up when you need a reason to feel happy.

6. Take a hot bath. Light some candles, play some relaxing music, and soak the stress of the day away.

7. Play a sport. Sports are a great way to not only get some exercise and relieve stress, they’re also a great way to socialize. And what could make you happier than spending time playing with your friends?

8. Take a nap. An afternoon nap may be just what you’re looking for. Even 15 minutes of shut-eye can help you feel more energized and happy.

9. Cuddle with your partner. Taking time to snuggle up shows your partner you appreciate them and are happy just spending quiet time together.

10. Spend time with your pets. There’s nothing quite like the unconditional love of a dog to make you feel happier when you’ve had a bad day.

11. Give yourself permission to be lazy. Often, our expectations of what we can do in a day are totally unrealistic and we stress over not getting enough done in a day. Giving yourself time unwind and just be lazy is a wonderful way to cheer yourself up.

12. Watch a movie. Make it a comedy or romance… something you know is going to have a happy ending, and grab the popcorn. Escape the daily worry and stress for awhile and you’ll feel happier and more refreshed afterward. :)

13. Make casual conversation. Strike up some lively conversations with strangers when you’re waiting in line at the store or the bank. If you’re friendly and happy towards them, most often they’ll return the sentiment.

14. Be thankful. Reflect on all the things that you’re grateful for in your life and write them down. Sometimes changing your focus to what’s going right in your life is all you need to turn that frown upside down. (If you need something to write in, you can pick up a journal here.)

15.Smile!

Enjoy each moment as it happens and don’t be afraid to get a little creative. There really are no limits to what you can do to feel happier throughout the day.

The whole time I was writing this, the song “Smile” by Uncle Kracker was running through my head. So here it is, just for you…

Have a great day, and thanks for being here. You make me smile! :)

Happiness, Motivation, and Other Acorns

I’m finding lots of new blogs today as I start my new system of using Google Reader to keep informed and organized.

One of the best so far today is Annabel Candy’s blog “Get In the Hot Spot.”

Here’s a couple of posts that I really found useful:

101 Ways To Feel Happy

How to Use Twitter as a Motivational Tool

Wanna know how I found Annabel’s blog?

Here’s the trail…

First I read a guest post by Eric Watermolen on the Dumb Little Man blog.

That led me to click on Eric’s link at the bottom of his post to check out his blog. The first post I came across there was The Campfire – A Collaborative Discussion of Happiness. This really caught my eye since the last issue of The Acorn Stash that I sent out was about Happiness so of course I had to see what everyone else has to say about the topic.

This led me to checking out everyone else’s blog who had contributed to the post, and that’s how I ended up at Annabel’s blog.

It’s also how I ended up at Patty Bechtold’s “Why Not Start Now” blog. This is another great find that I wouldn’t have stumbled across if I hadn’t been following trails and gathering acorns this morning. Her post Life As a Work of Art really made me stop and think about my writing and photography, and my relationship with my audience. (Or more accurately at this point, my lack of relationship with my audience.)

So how did all this come about? Well, I’ve been following along with Susan James’ Manifesting blog. I had planned on playing along when she started this way back in January and I completely forgot about it until just the other day. And one of the first things she says to do is to ask to be led to something to read each day. So I asked, and the result is that by reading one post on a blog I normally read, I ended up finding three new blogs and authors to follow, found four very helpful and thought-provoking articles, learned a new way to use twitter, and have the basic outline of a new article.

Not bad for a morning’s play, huh?

Hope you’re having an amazing day too!

Have a Happy Life: Five Ways To Boost Your Happiness Mindset

My mother was a very angry woman. So was her mother. Without dragging too much dirt out of the family closet, let me just say that neither of them lived a happy life. They’re favorite sayings to me were always either “Happiness doesn’t grow on trees” or “You can’t always have what you want in life.”

For the longest time I bought into that philosophy. Because in one way my mother and grandmother were right — happiness doesn’t grow on trees. The problem with their philosophy was that they never explained it to me. Maybe happiness doesn’t grow on trees, but they never told me where it did grow. It was the same way with them telling me I couldn’t always have what I wanted — it was a great saying, usually trotted out when I was being told “no” about something, but they never told me WHY I couldn’t always have it.

I like to think I’m a pretty happy person, and that if I put enough effort into it I can usually get the results I’m determined to have. But it hasn’t always been easy. I had to unlearn the “glass half-empty” mindset that my family taught me, and re-learn how to be an optimistic, “glass half-full” happy person. More importantly, I had to make the choice to be happy. And that was something that neither my mother nor my grandmother could help me with, no matter how much they loved me.

Creating a happy life for yourself is a conscious choice that only you can make. And it’s not about having more or getting more stuff (even if that’s what the commercials all say). To me, having a happy life means being more… being the best person you can be each and every minute of each and ever day. And no, it’s not always easy to stay happy in the face of all the negativity and miserableness in the world. But once you make the choice there are things you can do to ensure that you keep that happy mindset going, even when the going gets tough.

Here are five quick examples of things you can do to keep yourself in a happy mindset…

1. Be grateful. Use the lemons life throws at you to make the best lemonade you can. And know that even though you may not always get what you want, what you end up with might just be better than what you wanted in the first place.

2. Cultivate a support system. The old saying, “No man is an island,” is very true. It’s much easier to be happy when you have friends and family that also care about your happiness.

3. Create a “happiness journal.” Use it to write down things that make you happy. You can also use it to record your dreams and goals and what you’re doing to make them a reality.

4. Pray or meditate. Quieting your mind and spending time with your Higher Power (regardless of what name you call Him/Her)is a great way to stay focused on the positive and happy energy around you. Sometimes just knowing there’s a bigger picture and that there’s Someone out there looking out for you is enough motivation to keep going.

5. Create an outlet for frustration and anger. Whatever you do, don’t let feelings of frustration and anger build up inside you. They’ll make you sick and undermine all your progress at being happy if you let them. Go for a run, lift some weights, or punch a bag to get the negative energy out of your system. Studies have proven that people who exercise tend to feel better about life, and about themselves. And if you’ve never had an exercise “high” what can I say… better than chocolate. :)

Having a happy life is within your reach. It’s up to you to make the choice to go for it and to take the actions you need to in order to make it your reality. Happiness may not grow on trees, but it does grow inside of you and it’s just waiting to be let out to play.
