When times are tough, and things aren’t going your way; when money is tight, and you don’t know if you’re going to have a job next week, sometimes it’s really hard to feel grateful. And that’s exactly when we need to remind ourselves that we do have things to be grateful for.
Be Grateful For What Is Working
It’s very easy to get caught up in negative thoughts when things aren’t going as well as you’d like. One of the things you can do when you find yourself swamped by negative thoughts is to sit down and write out a list of the things that are working in your life that you feel grateful for.
Go easy on yourself by start with the most obvious things such as:
Do you have a home?
Did you eat today?
Are you healthy?
Do you have clothes to wear?
Just because you drive a used car or shop for clothes at Value Village doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t feel grateful to have them.
It’s also important to be grateful for the little things that happen in your life. A hug from a family member, a good night’s sleep, and hitting all the green lights on your morning commute are all things to be grateful for.
Be Grateful For Your Challenges
Another thing to be grateful for is the challenges that you face in tough times.
What? Is she nuts?
I can hear those thoughts a mile away. :) And no, I’m not nuts. Bear with me for a minute here and you’ll see what I mean.
If everything was smooth sailing throughout your life, there would never be any reason to learn new things. And if you never learn new things, there’s no reason to grow as a person.
Challenges in your life are there to help you grow – to become better, faster, and stronger than you are right now.
The trick to getting most out of challenges and tough times that life throws your way is to be thankful for them, and for the lessons you learn in dealing with them.
It’s not always an easy thing to do, but every time you overcome a challenge you have something else to be grateful for. Not only have you succeeded in getting through a rough patch in your life, by doing so you’ve given yourself more tools and knowledge that you can use to succeed next time.
Staying grateful when times are tough is a way to show yourself that you can handle anything life throws at you. And that’s definitely something to be grateful for!
