Get Out of That Rut: Easy Ways To Give Your Creative Energy a Boost, Part 1

purpleflowersI don’t know about you, but there are times when I can get into a serious creative rut. Nothing flows and I start feeling like I have the creative energy of a rock on those days.

I don’t let myself get too down about it though. Sometimes all it takes to get out of the rut is to find a new way of expressing myself.

Here are a few ideas you can use if you find your creative energy has decided to crawl under a rock for the day:

Redecorate a room in your house. It doesn’t have to be a major renovation project. A fresh coat of paint, or even just rearranging the furniture can be enough to stir the energy and get yours flowing again.

Change your wardrobe. Again, this doesn’t have to be drastic. Sometimes we slip into a rut with what we wear and don’t even notice it.

For example, at my least creative awhile back, my son pointed out to me that I hadn’t worn anything other than jeans and a black or grey t-shirt in years. We actually counted and I had over 30 black shirts in my closet. That’s a rut!

He dared me at that point to go a week without wearing anything black. So I went out and bought some new tops in bright blues and greens, and even a pink one. As soon as I changed the outward colour scheme, my inner energy shifted as well and I was able to start writing again. (And it was a good excuse for a shopping trip!)

Move your body. One of the easiest and cheapest ways to unstick your creative energy is just to get up and move your body. Turn on some funky music and dance for five minutes and see if whatever’s holding your creativity down doesn’t shake itself loose.

Use your imagination. Sometimes forcing the issue is the only way to move forward. But I’ve found that you have to be a little sneaky about it. :)

Some things you can do here are rewrite a fairy tale the way you think it should be told, or just write the silliest story you can think of at the time. No one’s going to see it but you.

My favorite thing to do when I’m really stuck is scribble. I have a nice big white board on the wall and when nothing else works to get my creativity flowing, I just pick up the markers and doodle and scribble all over the whiteboard. You’d be surprised at how often the seed of a new idea comes out of one of my scribble sessions.

Increasing your creative energy doesn’t have to take a lot of hard work or money to make changes. Most of the time you can get it flowing again by taking small actions that are just a tiny bit different than what you’ve been doing. The important thing is that you do take action and not let the lack of creative energy slow you down or stop you altogether.

Have a wonderful, creative day!

Expressions of Gratitude: Five Ways to Say Thanks

thankyou1_smThere’s a lot to be said for saying thanks. I know I’ve started keeping a gratitude journal on my personal blog, and since I’ve started I feel better, I sleep better, and I’m losing weight!

But some people have a hard time saying thank you even when they know they should. A lot of times it’s just that pesky ego getting in the way — we equate saying thanks with showing weakness on some level because by thanking someone for doing something for us, we perceive it as a weakness that we needed the help in the first place.

Even though you can acknowledge and write about how grateful you are in the privacy of your gratitude journal, sometimes it’s just not enough. You really do have to show that gratitude for the person responsible for it.

Just in case you have trouble saying the words, here’s a few more ways to express your feelings of gratitude…

Write a “Thank You” note.

Do you know how few people actually write anything by hand anymore? Taking time to pick out a nice thank you card and write a note inside it is a great way of showing your gratitude.

Give a “Thank You” gift.

A small gift as a token of your appreciation is another great expression of gratitude. It doesn’t have to be a big thing, a gift card for the bookstore or a favorite coffee shop is a great way to say thanks. Just slip the gift card in the thank you note for a double dose of gratefulness.

Return the Favor.

The gift of your time is one of the most personal expressions of gratitude there is. When someone does something for you, showing your appreciation by spending time with them lets you know how much you appreciate them (even when the actual words get stuck in your throat).

Share Your Gratitude Publicly.

Show your appreciation for someone by giving them your thanks in front of others.

And finally, suck it up and just say the words. Don’t stress about how you’re going to say it, just do it. A simple, heartfelt “Thank You” or “I appreciate you” will often be enough to let the other person know your feelings. Be genuine and smile you say it, and you’ll give both them and you a boost of good energy.

I know this post reads a bit like an etiquette lesson, but it really is important not to bottle up feelings of gratitude. They’re a lot like feelings of love that way — the more you express them and give them away, the better you feel about it!

Go ahead and try it! Use the comments section to share your expressions of gratitude with someone today. :)

My Favorite Quotes About Acorns

I’m not the only one who thinks acorns are pretty cool. In fact, I’d venture to say I’m in pretty good company here.:)

“The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn, the bird waits in the egg, and in the highest vision of the soul a waking angel stirs. Dreams are the seedlings of realities.” ~ James Allen

“The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Our ordinary mind always tries to persuade us that we are nothing but acorns and that our greatest happiness will be to become bigger, fatter, shinier acorns; but that is of interest only to pigs. Our faith gives us knowledge of something better: that we can become oak trees.” ~ E. F. Schumacher

“When the oak is felled the whole forest echoes with its fall, but a hundred acorns are sown in silence by an unnoticed breeze” ~ Thomas Carlyle

“From little acorns mighty oaks do grow” ~ American Proverb

“Genius unexerted is no more genius than a bushel of acorns is a forest of oaks.” ~ Henry Ward Beecher

“Think of the fierce energy concentrated in an acorn! You bury it in the ground, and it explodes into an oak! Bury a sheep, and nothing happens but decay.” ~ George Bernard Shaw

“Faith sees a beautiful blossom in a bulb, a lovely garden in a seed, and a giant oak in an acorn.” ~ William Arthur Ward

Why the Acorn Stash?

“The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

acorns1200I’ve always been fascinated by trees. How the mightiest of oaks begins life as a tiny acorn; how the tallest of maples starts out as a little key. When I was little I used to plant them in our back yard and watch faithfully for signs of new life.

That’s what acorns are to me — signs of new life. So when, a few years back, a chatroom friend gave me the virtual gift of a gold acorn and told me to plant and nurture it carefully because it held my hopes and dreams along with the seed of a new oak tree, the idea for “The Acorn Stash” was born.

This is the second incarnation of the “Stash.” I wasn’t ready for it the first time around. And only time will tell what direction I’ll end up going and whether or not this journey will be a successful one. But I’m ready to embrace a new life for myself, and to help you plant the seeds for your own new life whatever they may be.

For now, I’m just happy to be here, and very grateful both for the second chance. I’m also grateful to you for sharing a moment or two along the way. :)
